King Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem, and brought back to Babylon young Israelite men of good appearance, intelligence, wisdom, skill, and understanding. Daniel was one of the young men chosen – but he met a far different and more important criteria: God's criteria of faithfulness, adherence to His truth, and an unquenchable desire to please the Lord with his motives and actions.
